Biography
The Sixteen

Now celebrating their 21st anniversary season, The Sixteen, formed by Harry Christophers, are one of the jewels in the musical crown of Britain. The choir’s world-wide reputation is founded on concerts and award-winning recordings of early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance and a diversity of 20th century music. They have also won acclaim in Baroque performance, including a Handel oratorio series on CD of Esther, Alexander’s Feast, Messiah and Samson. They have recently performed St Matthew Passion in Barcelona and Madrid, visited Rome, Warsaw, Vienna, Amsterdam and Halle Händelfestspiele. Their future schedule includes Chester, Hexham Abbey, and Innsbruck festivals, Poulenc and Fauré with the BBC Philharmonic at the BBC Proms, opera in Lisbon, and a tour of Japan.

The Symphony of Harmony and Invention

One of the world’s outstanding period instrument orchestras, their integral partnership with The Sixteen and Harry Christophers began with a celebrated Messiah in 1986, recorded by Hyperion. In recent years they have emerged triumphantly in Baroque opera - Il Ritorno d’Ulisse (Lisbon Opera), The Fairy Queen (Barbican & Tel Aviv) and King Arthur (Lisbon) - festival concerts at Salzburg (Bach St John Passion), Lucerne (Handel Samson), Istanbul (Monteverdi Vespers ), BBC Proms, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and recent debuts at the Vienna Musikverein and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Their title uses the word ‘Symphony’ in its original sense of a group of players.
