"Moxie" The Women of the Manhattan Transfer, April 14th-15th and Legendary Tenor Saxophonist/Flutist James Moody, April 25th-28th

Plus the debut of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers Revue

Birdland, "The JAZZ Corner of the World," presents "Moxie" The Women of The Manhattan Transfer April 13th and 14th. Founding members Janis Siegel and Laurel Masse, along with present member Cheryl Bentyne have joined forces to present an unforgettable evening of vocal music including older Transfer material; Cole Porter; traditional hymns; Bach; Lambert, Hendricks & Ross; Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen, and Bob Dorough.

The millennium marked Jazz legend James Moody's 75th birthday and more than five decades in the music industry. Moody brings his quartet in for a special four-night engagement April 25th through 28th.

... Monday evenings beginning March 26th from 5:30-7:30pm, The Art Blakey Jazz Messengers Revue. Sporting the clean cut, suit wearing image of the period, Blakey alumnus and trombonist Gregory Charles Royal; Blakey alumnus and bassist Clarence Seay; drummer Eric Allen; Blakey Alumnus and pianist John Miller; trumpeter Chris Albert; and tenor saxophonist Shelley Carrol, recreate and interpret the music of the 1960's version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. $10 music charge.

... Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:30pm, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Centennial Band. $10 music charge

... Friday evenings from 5:30-7:30pm, Lew Anderson's All-American Big Band. $10 music charge

ALL SHOW TIMES: 9:00 & 11:00PM
Music charge varies (see schedule). There is a $10 minimum per person in addition to the music charge at the tables. One drink is included in the admission price at the bar.

APRIL 1 CHICO O'FARRILL AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ BIG BAND
Legendary Cuban composer, arranger and trumpeter Chico O'Farrill leads his 18-piece Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band with son, Arturo O'Farrill, as pianist and musical director. $20.

APRIL 2

TOSHIKO AKIYOSHI JAZZ ORCHESTRA FEATURING LEW TABACKIN
Vibrant bebop pianist, composer and bandleader Akiyoshi leads her Jazz Orchestra featuring virtuoso reedman Lew Tabackin. $20.

APRIL 3

THE FAMOUS DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA
The baton is passed from Duke's son to grandson. 20-year-old Paul Mercer Ellington keeps the flame alive with an ongoing tribute to the greatest of all Jazz composers. Please note trombonist Jack Jeffers leads the band on alternate weeks. $20.

APRIL 4

RANDY SANDKE SEXTET
Entertainment Weekly states that, "Few trumpeters interpret melodies more lyrically than Randy Sandke." Born and raised in Chicago, the trumpeter, composer, and arranger whose sextet favors a traditional style of Jazz has performed with artists ranging from Michael Brecker to Benny Goodman. Special guest Wycliffe Gordon. $20.

APRIL 5-7

GARY PEACOCK, PAUL BLEY, PAUL MOTIAN
The reunion of one of the most innovative groups in modern Jazz, pianist Paul Bley, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motion, perform a rare New York City engagement in celebration of their celebrated ECM release, 'Not Two, Not One.' 3/5, $25; 3/6-7, $30.

Trio Da Paz has been called, "Brazilian jazz at its best representing a new generation of musicians in the tradition but forging new ground." Trio Da Paz features Romero Lubambo, guitar; Nilson Matta, bass and Duduka DaFonseca, drums. $20.

JIMMY SCOTT
Vocalist Scott's unique way with songs, which cuts to the emotional core of lyrics with its subtly delayed timing, carefully clipped syllables, and ringing sustains, has inspired numerous other singers for half a century. Nancy Wilson and Frankie Valli borrowed elements of Scott's style in the '60's, while Lou Reed and Madonna have championed his singing in recent times. 4/18-19, $30; 4/20-21, $35.

JAMES MOODY
Legendary tenor saxophonist /flutist James Moody got his start in 1947 with the influential be-bop big band of Dizzy Gillespie - a year later he made his recording debut as a bandleader with James Moody and his Bop Men. In 1949 he recorded what would become his signature tune, Moody's Mood For Love. Now, almost 50 years later, Moody brings his quartet in for a special four-night engagement. 4/25-26, $30; 4/27-28, $35.
