The virtuoso Russian soprano Galina Gorchakova began her
career with the Lunacharski Opera and Ballet Theatre in Sverdolvsk. In 1990 she joined the
Mariinski Theatre (formerly the Kirov Opera) where the power, brilliance and versatility
of her coloratura singing and the physicality and dramatic intensity of her acting quickly
brought her international fame.
In particular, it was with the very contrasting roles of
Renata, the title part in Prokofiev's Fiery Angel, and Tatyana in Tchaikovsky's
Eugene Onegin that Galina Gorchakova first received worldwide acclaim. Since then she has
also been especially acclaimed for her interpretations of Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s Pique
Dame, Yaroslavna in Borodin's Prince Igor, Leonora in Verdi's Il trovatore,
Volkhova in Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko, Iolanta in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta, Tosca in
Puccini's Tosca, and Leonora in Verdi's La forza del destino.
Galina Gorchakova's great reserves of vocal power,
outstanding musicianship, and vivid acting have made her a highly sought after artist at
the world's top opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the New
York Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, La Scala Milan, and the Bastille Opera in
Paris. She has performed and recorded with top international conductors such as Valery
Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Neemi Jarvi and Seiji Ozawa.
Galina Gorchakova also has a wide recital repertoire, which
she has taken across Europe and America to highly enthusiastic receptions. She has
recently given recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Edinburgh Festival, the Lincoln
Center in New York, San Francisco, Vienna, and Milan (at La Scala).
Amongst her many recordings, Galina Gorchakova has received
particularly high praise for her audio and video recordings of her roles in
Tchaikovsky's Iolanta, Prokofiev's The Fiery Angel and Borodin's Prince
Igor, her audio recordings of roles in Rimsky-Korsakov's The Maid of Pskov,
Verdi's La forza del destino, Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa, Verdi's Don Carlos and
Puccini's Tosca, and her recording of Russian songs accompanied by Larissa Gergieva.
In 1998 Galina Gorchakova was awarded the Baltica Prize of
St Petersburg for her outstanding achievements in the world of Opera.
