Biography
Philip Langridge

Philip Langridge was born in Kent and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He is one of the world’s most distinguished singers, whose musical and dramatic qualities ensure that he is in constant demand throughout Europe, the USA and Japan.

His outstanding versatility and command of a wide variety of styles is reflected in his extensive discography, which ranges from the early classical period to the present day. Recordings have gained him two Grammy Awards for Moses und Aron and Peter Grimes, a Gramophone Award for Britten’s War Requiem and a Classic CD Award for Turn of the Screw. On video he can be seen in Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, Idomeneo, La Clemeza di Tito Oberon, Jenufa and Oedipus Rex. He was involved in a major recording project for Collins Classics of the 20th century British composers, notably Britten.

International festivals and opera houses with whom he is particularly closely associated include Salzburg, Metropolitan New York, La Scala Milan, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Edinburgh, Glyndebourne, Royal Opera House Covent Garden and English National Opera. His performances with these companies singled out for particularly high praise include Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, Death in Venice, Das Rheingold, Moses und Aron, Boris Godunov, Midsummer marriage, Rakes’s Progress, Idomeneo, Clemenza di Tito, Poppea, Semele, The Mask of Opheus, The Second Mrs Kong and many others.

In concert Philip Landgridge has appeared with the world’s major orchestras and leading conductors such as Abbabo, Barenboim, Bychokov, Davis, Gergiev, Haitink, Harnoncourt, Hickox, Levine, Mackerras, Masur, Mehta, Ozawa, Previn, Rattle and Solti.

He has given recitals with Steuart Bedford, John constable, Peter Donohoe, Maurizio Pollini, Andras Schiff, and more recently with David Owen Norris (fortepiano) in a tour of Schubert’s Die Winterreise, culminating in a performance at the Mozarteum Salzburg, to public and critical acclaim.

In addition to the Grammy and other awards, he received an Olivier Award for Osud, Singer of the Year Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Santay Award form the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He was awarded the CBE in 1994.

Current and future engagements include Das Rheingold and a revival of the highly acclaimed Moses and Aron for the Metropolitan, new productions of La Clemenza di Tito in Munich, and Peter Grimes at La Scala and Los Angeles, together with revivals of Billy Budd in Barcelona and Paris, and Palestrina for the Royal Opera House, London. He will also record for EMI and Chandos.
