Kato, a performance poet who has appeared at Serengeti Plains and works regularly in the New York Poet Scene, will work with students to develop creative literary interpretations in response to various musical pieces. The results of this workshop in "poetic jazz" will be showcased in the Amphitheater on Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM to launch the Jazz Festival weekend.

Tickets for the evening Tribute to John Coltrane are also $10.00. A combination Day/Evening pass is $15.00.

The idea for a large-scale Jazz festival resulted from conversations with the musicians, club owners and operators, presenters and retailers in Montclair. Montclair boasts a large Jazz population; many of the genre¹s greats reside within its borders and clubs and restaurants feature Jazz during their regular schedules. It is no surprise, then, that Montclair is rapidly becoming a major Jazz center in Northern New Jersey. The festival is produced by the Office of Art and Cultural Development. Production co-coordinator for the school residency and concerts is Reggie Workman, and the Pub Crawl was organized by Bruce Tyler. The festival is sponsored by the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs, PNC Bank, Montclair Jaguar, Wm. H. Connolly & Co. and funded in part by a grant from The New Jersey State Council on the Arts. For information or to reserve tickets contact the Office of Art and Cultural development at 973-509-4910.
